New York, NY: When it comes to storytelling, "Once upon a time..." is apparently, well, once upon a time. A tale on the Liar Show stage is more likely to begin, "It's Christmas morning and Dad is rummaging though our dead neighbor's stuff." Which is funny--if you like your humor dark--but is also disarmingly honest. Or is it? Each show features four performers telling short, personal stories that will make you laugh, make you squirm, or just make you glad you don't live with them. But listen carefully because, earnest as they may appear, one of these basically honest people is pulling your leg. After the storytelling first half of the show, the audience is given an opportunity to interrogate the performers and sniff out the fish story. Anyone who spots the Liar wins a prize described as "worth its weight in Fool's Gold." Actually the "I Can Tell A Lie" t-shirt is probably worth about a nickel more than that.
Liar Show storytellers have included personalities like New Yorker contributor Andy Borowitz, Mike Daisey, called "The master storyteller," by the NY Times, and former Bill Clinton speech writer, Mark Katz. Depending on the night, you may also hear stories from a police detective, a sculptor, a hairdresser or a lapsed evangelical. The show's creator and host, Andy Christie, is a writer and storyteller himself. His work has appeared in the NY Times and he is the 2007 Moth National Storytelling Champion. The Liar Show is the newest addition to the storytelling scene, where national organizations like The Moth and local NYC series with names like Speakeasy and Mouthpiece have reinvigorated an oral tradition born around campfires and kitchen tables: just plain stories. Amusing, touching or appalling. Now Liar brings something a little different to that table--perhaps something a little more honest: deceit.
